KAJAL KASHYAP
VISUAL ARTIST
Being born as a first girl child in the typical lower middle-class family of a small village in Uttar Pradesh near Muzzaffarnagar to currently living in Gurgaon (the so-called metro city), I have seen many social hierarchies in my everyday life. From my childhood and from the eyes of many women (my grandmothers, mother, sister, friends, aunt, neighbours) in my life, I strive to investigate the position of ‘second sex’ and invisible hierarchies that exists in society. I’ve the repercussion (inferiority complex) of being born in a lower caste so far and perhaps always.
Following in my mother’s step in our patriarchal society-as I do in my role as a human, artist and a woman, I present woman philosophically in time and space with this contrasting world. My art consists of paintings, drawings, installations, found-objects, videos, performances which employs concepts of personal and cultural identity, nostalgia, gender, sexuality, class, caste and worldly realities (i.e. unrecognized women’s labor and right to freedom of expression). The incorporation of mundane things such as thread, dupatta, used undergarments, clothes (both men and women), saree, chunari (small red dupatta used to decorate Indian female deity e.g. durga maa, gayatri maa etc.) become signifies of intense social critique respectively struggle untying. My performance practice deals with the notion to break free from innate inhibitions, existential crisis, bodily toxicity, socio-political unrest.
A very integral part of my artworks is my handwritten texts and poems as it talks about my private-self, making it more intense, more real and more about existence. My work not only addresses women’s roles, but also discusses a human condition. The use of the female genitalia in my work appears as a question of gender role in Indian canon and also make viewers think about political consequences of their acts.
In the future, I see my art work marking the existence of sexual fluid and summarized dialogue in both feminist and contemporary art world.

I believe it is due to this, that sexual fantasy gains importance in a human being’s life and an individual achieves extreme pleasure out of this simple act of day-dreaming, wherein s/he escapes from the harsh realities of this world via an undisturbed and uninterrupted flight of imagination.” -T.VENKANNA

MY CUP OF TEA is series of Performance photography based on the individuality of a girl/woman,i've found self-expression in various mediums over the years, but it is my work that related to the themes of gender equality and gender identity that continuously resonated with us. Treads even further into the abstract with questions like - does gender bias end with death, or continue, as most rituals after death are mostly patriarchal?
